The creative art of deception.
Image manipulation, as the name suggests, is the application of image editing techniques to photographs in order to create an illusion or a deception; as opposed to simple image enhancement or colour correction.
Before the advent of computers and systems such as the Quantel Paintbox and later, software like Adobe Photoshop™, photographic manipulation was achieved by various "analogue" methods. Retouching with ink or paint, darkroom exposure techniques, stripping negatives together, and even things as drastic as scratching the emulsion on a negative have all been used to drastically change the appearance of photographs.
In an digital image editing studio, software is used to apply techniques or effects to an image until the desired creative result is achieved and the final image may have little or no resemblance to the original supplied photography. Imagery created by the artists at Fluid has been used in many successful advertising and marketing campaigns across the UK.
