Proofreading which has always been one of the relatively unchanged professional prepress services, means reading a proof copy of a text document in order to detect and correct any spelling mistakes or grammatical errors before handing over to reprographic companies for further professional repro services to be applied to the job. Modern proofreading often requires reading copy at earlier stages throughout the production process.

Page Layout is a professional repro service commonly known as Desktop Publishing, it is the arrangement of text and images on computer to suit a certain page size and is usually output in an electronic file in PDF format. This page size is usually specified by the Customer or the publication and will have technical details embedded within the PDF file that will match the required printing process.

Professional prepress companies have had to adapt their specialist reprographic services over time to take on board the change from manual typesetting to typesetting using computers or “desktop publishing” .
